Overview

Peralassery Subramania Temple is a renowned temple located at the Malabar region. The presiding deity of this temple is Lord Subramanya, the son of Lord Shiva. It is almost 15 kilometers away from Kannur on the Kannur – Koothuparambu road at Mundallur. This shrine is associated with Ramayana, the famous Hindu Epic. It is believed that Lord Rama halted at this spot on his way to Lanka along with his brother Lakshmana to free his wife Sita from Ravana.


Description

Peralassery Sri Subrahmanya Temple is a famous pilgrimage location about 14 km from Kannur. Lord Subrahmanya, the son of Lord Shiva, is the main deity worshiped at this temple. The idol is the serpent form of Lord Subrahmanya, and the chief offerings are eggs. Legend has it that this is a place Lord Rama and Lakshamana visited, during their quest to rescue Sita, on their way to Lanka (in the epic Ramayana). The massive temple pond and the annual Kodiyettam festival are the main attractions here. A visit here leaves one at peace and full of tranquil memories.

In this temple, the important idol is that of Lord Subramania and the main offerings are in the form of vazhipaddu, Subramania Puja and Mutta Oppikal which are the offerings of eggs to the honored snake deity so that the devotees are able to have their wishes fulfilled from the snake God. Nearby small holy places such as that of Chuttambalam have deities of Lord Ganesha and Lord Ayyapa.The Pond which you see in the premises of Peralassery temple is famous all over the world for its beautiful structure. It is also considered to be biggest amongst all of the ponds present in any temple, in Kerala.The story is very unique behind this temple and has its roots in the Ramayana epic.It has been said that, it was in this temple that Sri Rama and his brother Lakshmana made a stop when they were going to Sri Lanka, in their search and endeavor to rescue Goddess Sita from the clutches of Ravana's.

Important Dates


Kodiyettam festival is a weeklong festival which is associated with the Peralassery Subramanya temple and is celebrated in the month of December, every year. It is celebrated for eight days. Chakyarkoothu, Kathakali, Parayan Thullal, Ottanthullal, and Seethankan Thullal are the main forms of art which are performed during the festival.
