The Arakkal Dynasty, which found its origins in the 16th century is the only native Muslim Royalty to have ruled Malabar and Lakshadweep Islands with Kannur as its capital. The museum is housed in the durbar hall of the Arakkal Palace, and displays the artifacts of the erstwhile kingdom.

Kannur, also known as Cannanore, is a city and a Municipal Corporation in Kannur district.
